American University Model at SLU

The American Institute of Cameroon has the sole objective of ensuring a continuing effort to maintain the American standard at St Lawrence University. It studies methods of adopting and adapting the American system of education to the reality in Cameroon and Africa. It also collects data, perform analysis and research on the changing scene of higher education in America and around the world.
American higher education is synonymous with “quality”, and many factors are used to explain this excellence:
At St Lawrence University, the syllabuses and textbooks are often the same as those used in similar courses in the United States. Through the Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) program, we use open course ware courses from Stanford, Berkeley and MIT as additional learning resources. In addition, we seek to hire American-trained academic staff, and to provide continuous training on the American system to other academic staff members to give the university a real American touch. Our academic performance standards and expectations match those on most American campuses.
St Lawrence has an American framework and a Cameroonian character. American methods and syllabi are adopted and adapted to the needs of the student population in Cameroon and Africa. The curricula provide general knowledge but are also skill-directed and career-oriented. The needs of the individual student are at the center of everything we do. All academic staff follow the “open door” policy, and are given ample opportunities to conduct research and make contributions to scholarship.
At SLU, we work towards developing a culture of excellence by combining American educational values and methods with the realities of the African context. SLU uses both academic staff and practicing professionals to give students a complete picture of their career.
